LAWG meets US Embassy representatives: Ministry of Health moves in the right direction

2017-12-07

On Thursday December 7, 2017, representatives from the Local American Working Group (LAWG) met with Ms. Diane Kohn, the Political and Economic Deputy Chief at the US Embassy in Lithuania. During the meeting the current situation within the Lithuanian healthcare system, in particular the medicines sector, were discussed.

Representatives from LAWG have expressed their support for the Lithuanian Ministry of Health’s aim to reduce the price of generic medicines. “Despite continuing difficulty with implementing a policy that both ensures and increases access for Lithuanian patients to the most innovative treatment, the Ministry is moving in the right direction concerning the reduction of generic medicine prices. We congratulate them and hope to see even more action in the future” stated LAWG’s representative Ruta Pumputiene.

One of LAWG’s main areas of work is the support of Lithuanian patients’ rights and access to new and innovative medicine by increasing transparency within the reimbursement decision-making procedure and decreasing the price of generic medicines. “We’re glad to hear that everything LAWG has been working towards solving and changing, including the issues of decreasing the price of generic medicines, increasing transparency within the reimbursement decision-making and an increase in accessibility to innovation have now reached the highest governmental levels” continued Pumputiene.
